James Mead was born in Laindon on 20 October 1754 By 1808 he and his wife were living and working on Fairmead Farm in Basildon.
They had seven children between 1784 and 1801 in Basildon.
On 1 June 1808 James and Elizabeth travelled to market in Romford. On their way home their horse was startled and their carriage tipped over. As the horse bolted the carriage ran them both over killing James instantly, whilst Elizabeth clung to life for a few more hours.
On 5 June 1808 they were buried at Holy Cross Church, Basildon.
James and Elizabeth are my 13x Great Grandparents.

In the parish register of Holy Cross Church the rector, Edward Hodgson, describes the demise of James Mead and his wife. "James Mead and his wife (who had for many years occupied the Fair House Farm in Basildon) were returning from Romford Market in a light cart on Wednesday June 1st 1808, when they were overtaken about the 15 milestone by a Gentleman's Coach with four post horses from Ilford. The two drivers, by shouts & strange noises, alarmed poor Mead's horse to such a degree that immediately after having crossed a Bridge which is there, he took so much to the left of the Road - that one of the wheels ran for a considerable distance on the Causeway & the cart was at length overturned: just at the moment when the Coach was passing by. The wheels of the Coach went over the bodies of the unfortunate couple. The husband was killed on the spot - & the wife survived him only a few hours."
