Arthur Cooper
We are researching those persons from the Borough who were unfortunate to be captured by the Japanese. We are currently particularly interested in ARTHUR COOPER who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.) and was a prisoner in Japan for three and half years. Soon after his return he married Miss Doreen McGuinness at All Saints Church, Vange they had both lived in the area for over 20 years – Does anybody have any information on them, if so we will be pleased to hear from you .
Any information about others that served time as a Japanese POW and survived to return to live in Basildon Borough

Henry Francis Simpson We are currently researching those local persons who became prisoners of the Japanese after of the fall of Singapore. Henry Francis Simpson from the Ramsden area married Rose Revening at St Nicholas Church, Laindon in 1929. He was a gunner who spent over three years as a prisoner of war and we were wondering if there is anybody around who remembers him or his family. Also, if you are aware of any other soldiers who suffered under Japanese occupation – we would love to hear from you.

Hi Jo. Just came across this forum and your post. I knew Alfred Cooper (not Arthur) who was a prisoner of war in Japan. He was one of my dad's best friends. He lived at 525 Clay Hill Road, Vange. The Coopers' lived in Vange and Pitsea for many years; I remember Alf's mother - Gertrude (Gert) Cooper. She was one of my grandmother's best friends. She used to play the piano in the hall above the Co-op near the Barge PH and was a member of the Co-op Women's Guild. Alf never talked much about being a PoW but I do remember telling me that he was a conscientious objector so was enlisted in the Medical Corps and posted to Singapore in the war. He was captured and sent to Changi Jail. Before the war he worked as an errand boy /delivery boy for 'Doughie' Saunders the baker in Vange / Pitsea.
